Fun Plants for your HOME

I have been all about plants in my home lately. Maybe it is my winter blues, but man, they cheer me up! I have been wanting to freshen up my space with some new ones!

Remember, when I mentioned that I scored some good deals on plants last week? Well, I crafted up some pretty pots this weekend!

This is what I started with……

I used planters that I already owned. They were looking sad.

I started by painting the terracotta pot with a fun yellow acrylic paint. I did 5 coats! I then used copper leaf and adhesive to make it fun. I used painters tape to section off my shapes. I have to say, that I think I might be addicted to using copper/gold leaf right now! Oh my word, so fun!

On the gray pot, I did 2 yellow triangles and 2 copper leaf!

For the leafing technique…..

1. section off your desired area you want the copper to go.
2. paint a thin coat of adhesive on the surface. wait 20-30 minutes for it to change from milky white to clear.
3. apply the gold/silver/copper leaf to the area.
4. I used a spray sealer on my pots so they are water resistant!

That is it. easy.

I painted copper leaf on the base of my new hanging basket! Hint: this is the master bath…..There will be a reveal later this week of my newly decorated space. (the pix is taken before I painted the room) I want to make the copper line more straight……. soon…..

After! So pretty.

So what do you think? Have you used copper/gold leaf before? It is so easy! I love it! Any projects that you are working on right now?

Happy Monday!

H54F

Happy Friday everyone! It is a blizzard in Rochester!!!! I am excited to have a snow day in with my family. Every Friday, I link up with Lauren for High Five For Friday! I show you my favorite pix from my week! Here they are:

We had a busy week in our family with birthdays! My daughter-Zion, husband-Andy and my sister-Chelsea all had birthdays! Chelsea and I celebrated by taking my 3 year old for her first pedicure! It was so much fun. She was hilarious at the nail salon. We both got purple nail polish with sparkles, of course!

I had my 2nd week of Lock Love Wednesday! I started posting weekly pictures off my phone of my daily hair to show you creative new looks. Even being a hairstylist, you can get in a hair rut. I have pictures here and here! Link up with me every Wednesday to show what new things you are doing with your hair!

My fam got all festive for a photo shoot at our friends amazing studio in Rochester. It is in a building from the turn of the century. Brick walls/ wood floors/ character everywhere. Zakiyah turned 6 months old this week, so we had adorable pictures taken of her! I will post on that later! This picture is from my iPhone- I love feet pictures! Nothing better than chunky baby legs...

We have the blessing of having an amazing nanny from our youth group! She spoiled Zion with this hat and mustache cup for her 3rd birthday. The hat has been worn daily ever since!

I have been busy crafting/painting for fun! I will post next week some of my projects that I have going on. Happy Friday! Have a great weekend!

Mudroom // Before and After

Over the weekend, I decided to get going on our mudroom. It has been a hot mess since we moved in and driving me CRAZY. We have lived in our house for over 2 years now and I am getting so sick of the the beige walls in every room. They are painted, "flat" and show every knick and scratch. I decided to go to Sherwin-Williams for paint. They have HGTV paint colors that I adore. I used them in our basement and dining room already. Here are some before pictures of the disaster zone.

This room is our catch all. The white door is our garage door. The mudroom is the perfect size for having a central hub for our coats/bags/shoes etc. We are going to have to be creative with how we use the little wall space for organizing considering we have 4 doors and a closet door in this room. The doors go to the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and garage.

As you can see, I struggle with organizing in this room. We definitely need some shelving and hooks on the walls to eliminate the floor clutter.

View looking into kitchen.

Closet and garage door view. I decided to go with Silver mist by HGTV for the mudroom color. I love it.  It is the perfect mix of gray/silver/blue. It is relaxing and has a brightness to it that I was look for. Here are the after pictures.

Doesn't it look great? Ignore the smoke alarm......we have to get a new one. This one is not working properly.

I rehung the shelf that I got at TJMaxx to the right of the kitchen doorway. I love this shelf. It holds our keys/gum/letters and other odds and ends. I love that it has numbers on it.

Here is the angle from the corner by the closet.

Looking into the kitchen. I want to put some shelving/hooks to the left on the doorway.

Looking at the garage door. I got the mirror a decade ago at TJMaxx and the knob hook is from there too. We use it for my purse and Zion's backpack. I got the basket on the floor at TJMaxx too. The shoe mat is from Lowe's and the rug is a cheapie from Target.

I want to paint or mod podge the mirror something. I am not feeling the black leather anymore. Any ideas for me?

The backpack is PotteryBarnKids from Grandma and Grandpa. Isn't it so cute?

Here is a snapshot looking into the mudroom from the kitchen. I was really excited to finally hang up the growth chart that Andy surprised us with last Christmas (2011). He wrote out the scripture, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

He painted vines on it and we paint a feather every time we measure the girls. Zion is a red color and Zakiyah will be a navy I think. The wood spilt a touch when we drilled it in so I have to touch it up. But I love having it. It is so unique and has a lot of meaning to me. I love homemade gifts. So now, I have to get a new light.  I must get something more fun. I will be shopping clearance to find one.

the making of a dining room

It's funny how moving into a new home takes awhile to get acquainted. It is a lot like meeting people and building a friendship. Andy and I moved into our home on Dunlap a year and a half ago and I am slowing making it ours. I have learned to not rush things when it comes to paint colors, decorations etc. I have been in the "I want to get to you know you phase" with our home.
Especially with the basement finish/Tala Hair Studio open last fall, taking up a lot of time and mula. But I have been really excited for our dining room as of late. When we moved into our house, the previous owners used it as a study/bonus room. (picture below)
Zion was 9 months old when we moved into the house and we originally went with the same concept. Except we added toys to the mix :) But after further thought, I really want a dining room. At our old house, we had one and I have missed the formality of it. I love how cozy a dining room can be. Also, we love to host, so it gives us way more space for dining and that way the cook doesn't have to see the mess in the kitchen post prep! So Pinterest is my friend like everyone and I have been pinning and dreaming for our "dining room".
Around the holidays we received a gift of a "broken chandelier" that needed some Cass love. So we switched out the old chandelier that is in the above photo (which is now for sale...hint hint) for something that was more us! I have been eyeing this amazing coconut chandelier from West Elm for awhile and we got the blessing of getting a damaged one that basically needed a light kit.
So when Andy's fam was here for Christmas, Andy's dad and him put it in for me! They hit up Lowes and bought a cheap light and used the "kit" essentially to make ours up and running.
This is a shot of Andy's dad the day they were taking down the old light. You can also get a peek at the hot mess my room was before. No theme. No concept. and Plastic table :) Classy Christmas in the Cass Casa. Next up, was PAINT! PTL for paint. I knew I wanted this room to be the darkest in the house for some mood lighting! I love a cozy, romantic and relaxing environment while eating. So we went with the same color we have on our TV wall in the basement. It is Sherwin Williams, Urban Bronze in Satin. It is part of their HGTV line for color. It instantly changed the dynamics of the room. I love it.
Next up, was some colorful art to liven up the space. My BFF, Jody sells amaze fabric, which I have mentioned before. Well, last summer she ordered the new Amy Butler line called "Lark" and I fell in love.

It was during my salon build and decor planning. I fell hard for anything with "ikat" and "chevron" right off the bat. But, even 9 - 12 months ago it was hard to get your fingers on items with those patterns. So when Jodes ordered this line she knew I would be obsessed. She was right! So Jody and I decided to do some wall art with the fabric. I bought 14 canvases that were 12x12 in size from Michaels.

So we went ahead and stretched the fabric on the canvases. We used a staple gun and it worked like a charm! It is such fun art for a small budget while making a big statement! So finally, a couple weeks ago, my amazing hus hung them for me! I love it.
So here you can see the amazing Urbane Bronze paint, as well as the Chandelier! Doesn't it make a diff? I love it!!!! We hung the canvases on the wall with a few inches in between to balance it out! I had fun deciding where to put each pattern.

Here is a close up of the detail of the fabric. Seriously, LOVE!

So we obviously hung the canvases 4 across/4 down with 2 "filler" square frames from Target to balance it out and to switch it up a bit! Do you likey? I do:)

Just another shot to it. When we put these up I decided to switch up my entryway too. I used everything that I already owned. I just went in a few rooms to retrieve some goodies.

The ottoman and big plant is from Target. I got the table at Goodwill, but it was originally from Target too. The lamp is from Pottery Barn which happens to match the paint perf. I love moving things around, makes you feel like you are shopping!
So that is the progress on the D.R. We have a long ways to go.......the current D.R. table is our outdoor patio table. ha ha. Oh the magic of a table cloth. Andy is going to be building us a harvest table to seat 12 soon! I can't wait. We have some really fun ideas for that....updates to come. We are also going to build a banquet at the front windows with storage and built in shelving on both sides. I want all of that to be white, so it will really pop out against the dark grey. We also have to hang things on the two opposing walls...but it all comes with time. hope you enjoyed....ta ta
